Bachelor Duke

Did anyone see the BBc2 programme, House Detectives, on December 15th? The usual team of experts were stripping away wallpaper and poring over census data for Fife House, the home of the Bachelor Duke of Devonshire in the middle of the ninteenth century.

They discovered that, while other servants came and went, Baker, the Duke's butler, occupied a small house at the rear of the substantial seafront property for twenty five years. Encouraged by the two men who now own the house, the experts agreed that the Duke's relationship with his manservant was "unusually close". We're on the trail..
