Barbara Bell Invites You: Just Take Your Frock Off

Phew! We made it at last. Barbara Bell's autobiography, Just Take Your Frock Off, tumbled out of the printer's van and into an unsuspecting world on 9th June. It's now available from Out!Brighton, Waterstone's and other good bookshops, on the Internet, from DIVA magazine mail order and direct from us (at £7.99 plus £1 post and packing).

Its production has been a real family affair with several members of our lesbian and gay families pitching in to help. We'd like to thank very sincerely Joyce Chester for designing the inside of the book, Andrew Kay for designing the cover, Emma Donoghue for writing the back cover blurb and allowing us to use her name to promote it and an anonymous Brighton lesbian for putting up the money for us to get it all done. Lynne Fox, a cousin in the women's movement, took beautiful photographs of Barbara on Brighton beach which have been used in the book and reproduced in July's DIVA magazine to accompany Rose Collis's fab article.

Thannk you to them and to all those of you who have given your support in other ways, not least carting books about and being there with words of comfort in the darkest hours of transcription and editing. Finally, of course, thank you to Barbara for sharing her life with us - it's been a privilege to work with her and we shall miss it.

Sadly, a trip for Barbara in a Morgan convertible sports car, courtesy of BBC2's Gaytime TV has had to be cancelled - they were going to feature her in the last show of their recent series but Barbara hurt her leg badly and had to pull out.

We expect, though, that by 15th August Barbara will be back on her feet and well enough to meet all of you who would like to come to the Marlborough pub at 7pm to see slides of photos from the book and hear some extracts of the original tape recordings from which the book was made. This is a Friends of Brighton Ourstory Project event in conjunction with OUT! Bookshop and Brighton Pride Arts Festival.
