Bombing Down to Brighton

A big thank-you to Sheila for donating to us for safe keeping her 1965 cine film of a Minorities Research Group camping weekend on the Downs at the edge of Hove Golf Course. Sleeping overnight in tents and cars about ten lesbians lounged and barbecued while golfers teed off in the background.

Val remembers the mood as being one of jovial hilarity. After breakfast at the Regency restaurant (Val had two fry-ups because she was so hungry), the band went for a stroll along the West Pier which was then open for business. Sheila remembers that there were no traffic problems in Brighton then - you could park anywhere! She also has this fond lesbian car memory:

Cravats and convertibles

"We came down in a red Hillman convertible. That was our pride and joy. I didn't know her all that well, but I knew Nancy Spain and she had a white one. She was a bit of an icon - a lot of people modelled themselves on her. Same sort of clothes, cravats, going to the ex-army places to get your clothes.

I was with Vivienne at that time and we were determined we were going to get a car exactly the same as Nancy Spain, who used to parade around at Chelsea and Fulham in hers. So we saved up and we bought a red one."
